If rates of baby death were the same for Black and Asian babies as white babies; 1,616 lives could have been saved between 2019 and 2023 in the UK.
In May, bereaved parents delivered an open letter to 10 Downing Street calling for urgent action to end this inequality.
The Government has now responded, confirming steps including introducing a Maternity and Neonatal Commissioner and rolling out a Perinatal Equity and Anti-Discrimination Programme.
The letter also reconfirms their commitment to setting explicit targets to close the maternal mortality gap for Black and Asian women.

But this is not enough. We are calling for targets to reduce the mortality gap for babies, to end inequalities by ethniticy in baby loss.
