An All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) is a group of MPs and members of the House of Lords from different political parties that focuses specifically on an issue or topic, in this case baby and pregnancy loss.
When a new government forms, APPGs dissolve and need to be established anew. Politicians in previous APPGs on Baby Loss have been committed to preventing baby loss and supporting bereaved parents and some had their own personal connections to the issue. Sands provided the Secretariat to the last APPG on Baby Loss, and hopes to continue in this Parliament, working with committed politicians to influence future change that will save babies and support bereaved parents.
- Why does the APPG on Baby Loss matter?
It was thanks to the Safe Staffing campaign, run with the APPGs on Maternity and Baby Loss, that the last government committed to recruiting 2,000 more midwives in 2022. The APPG on Baby Loss also helped establish the National Bereavement Care Pathway, ensuring bereavement care standards are set and implemented nationally.
Having more MPs engaged and involved in the APPG is crucial to building a network of MPs that can amplify the voices of the baby loss community and ensure that issues around pregnancy loss and the death of a baby are raised in Parliament.
